Aravind Adiga @ Southbank Centre - Description

As part of the London Literarture Festival 2009, the Southbank Book Club meets to discuss “The White Tiger”:

Southbank Centre Book Club: Aravind Adiga – The White Tiger

Southbank Centre Book Club reads Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger, winner of the 2008 Booker Prize. Balram, the White Tiger, was born in a backwater village but nurses a dream of escape. When he learns that a rich village landlord needs a chauffeur, he takes his opportunity. Driven by ambition, he comes to see how the Tiger might escape his cage. This tale presents a raw and unromanticised India, both thrilling and shocking.

‘The novel undertakes the extraordinarily difficult task of gaining and holding the reader’s sympathy for a thoroughgoing villain. The book gains from dealing with pressing social issues and significant global developments with astonishing humour.’ Michael Portillo
