Brendan Foster broke the 3000m record at Gateshead stadium in 1974 and the venue has since played host to many of the world’s sporting greats including the New Zealand All Blacks, Haile Gebreselassie and Paula Radcliffe.
The Diamond League heads to the North East as top athletes line up for the Aviva British Grand Prix, just two weeks before the European Championships in Spain.
A 4 carat diamond trophy is also on offer as part of the ‘IAAF Diamond Race’ which rewards season long consistency.
