Benjamin Zephaniah @ Southbank Centre - Description
Benjamin Zephaniah is famous for his poem which begins “Be kind to your turkey this Christmas” and, ironic given his past, he will take to the Queen Elizabeth Hall to give a performance as part of the London Literature Festival:
One of the UK’s poetry greats, Benjamin Zephaniah, reads from new work and older favourites at this exclusive London show, sure to be one of the highlights of the festival.
Zephaniah’s poetry grew out of the Jamaican rhythms and street voices of his upbringing in Handsworth. His mission to fight the dead image of poetry in academia, and to ‘take [it] everywhere’, has inspired a generation of readers and fellow writers. Zephaniah is also a dub musician of international standing, and hosted Nelson Mandela’s Two Nations Concert in 1996. Increasingly a campaigning voice for animal rights and anti-racist movements, Zephaniah’s collection Too Black, Too Strong was a prelude to his rejecting an OBE from the Queen in 2003.
He is introduced by Southbank Centre’s Artist in Residence, Lemn Sissay.
