In the first century Lincoln was called Lindum Colonna and inhabited by demobbed Roman legionnaires and their families. One of the most visible remains of this period is Newport Arch built by the Romans over Ermine Street and still in use by traffic today.
Few cathedrals in England are as awe inspiring as the medieval Lincoln Cathedral which towers above the city. It is responsible for one of the four copies of the Magna Carta, as well as ancient texts and manuscripts. William the Conqueror’s castle dates from 1068 and its medieval ramparts give magnificent views over Lincoln.
