Wolverhampton lies on the edge of the West Midlands, a large mainly urban area, stretching across to Birmingham and Coventry in the south east. The area extends to Walsall in the north and Dudley, Stourbridge and Halesowen in the south.

Wolverhampton is also at the north eastern corner of an area known as “The Black Country”. Its name comes from the extensive industrialisation that formerly characterised the area – once famous for iron and steel production.
