CHRIS HELME (SEAHORSES) @ Hare & Hounds - Description
There probably aren’t many thirty-something guys from Yorkshire who have a voice like they are the love child of Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald but York’s Chris Helme is one of them. An accomplished and experienced musician, his song writing and singing possesses a honed craft and emotional depth which these days are often hard to find.
John Squire could see it when he asked Chris to front his post Stone Roses project ‘The Seahorses’ back in the late 1990’s and Chris’s vocals became one of the defining sounds of the Britpop era. His debut solo album; ‘Ashes’ was recorded, described as an ‘emotional, stripped down set of late night love songs’ (IsThisMusic.com), the record is a fragile and simple affair recalling the early acoustic work of Neil Young and Tim Buckley. Many of the songs feature only lightly finger picked guitar lines and Helme’s emotive vocals, the minimal instrumentation allowing the album to be the perfect showcase for his song writing and singing.
Armed with his guitar, stunning voice and by now an almost unhealthy knowledge of the UK rail network, the last year saw Chris playing over 130 shows from the North of Scotland down to the South coast of England. All receiving rave reviews from fans and Critics alike; The Fly magazine exalting Chris as: ‘one of the most eloquent and raucously British voices in the last 2 decades’. With this work ethic Chris has not only reacquainted himself with the legion of fans of his previous work but has also gained a whole new generation of admirers.
Street poet and all round local legend Barnesy! He’s got a nice knack of combining a sort of high speed, rap tinged vocal delivery with a surprisingly soulful voice on tracks. Cockshure Kinksy-ness from bluesy bawler Barnesy is something worth noting for ‘09. With both respect and disregard for the Queens English in equal measure, young Tom Barnes spins yarns of rationale beyond his years and an inquisitive eye for decadence. ‘Estates in a State’ is a Dylan-meets-Jamie T ramble with the haunting darkness of Johnny Cash.
From the heart of England itself, Black Market Empire are here to prove that Birmingham still holds some quality sounds. The newly formed ‘Black Market Empire’ combine the guitarist of previous band Escobar with three new very talented lads. With a member having previous interest from the likes of Polydor, EMI and experience playing with The Enemy, The Twang, The Bluetones and The View. Black Market Empire are bringing back catchy Rock and Roll to the Midlands.
