Pirates of Penzance is arguably the most popular and humorous of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas.
Sullivan’s energetic score contains some of his most beautiful music; Gilbert’s characters in his most topsy-turvy of plots include Frederic, the pirate’s apprentice, who was born on February 29th in a leap year and therefore won’t be 21 until he’s 84; the Pirate King and his men; Major General Stanley an his daughters; and the local constabulary led by the Sergeant of Police. Great songs include “I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major-Generalâ€, “With Cat-Like Treadâ€, “Poor Wandering One†among many others.
