The Arctic and Us @ Southbank Centre - Description

In 2008, Cape Farewell took an international group of artists to The Arctic, one of whom was Southbank Centre Artist in Residence Lemn Sissay. What if is a short film featuring a poem written and performed by Lemn Sissay and broadcast on Channel Four as part of its Three Minute Wonders, celebrating the 200th Anniversary of Darwin’s birth. Artist in Residence, Lemn Sissay, discusses the making of the poem, climate change and his experience in the Arctic. What if is exclusively shown as part of this event.

Following Lemn, David Lan, playwright and artistic director of the Young Vic, and David Buckland, artist and director of Cape Farewell discuss a dog sled expedition made in March of this year to Greenland’s Liverpool coast. Sleeping in tents on the sea ice and enduring temperatures of -35°, the two encountered the extremities of the high Arctic and of climate change. Together they talk about their experiences and this unusual route taken towards artistic inspiration and action. The discussion is chaired by Ruth Little, writer and literary manager at the Royal Court theatre.
