As part of the London Literature Festival 2009, Claire Harman and Deborah Moggach present a talk about the continuing success of Jane Austen’s work.
Jane Austen is more than just a classic author. From TV and film adaptations to romantic comedy, to the very heritage industry itself, her iconic status pervades contemporary culture. Clare Harman, author of Jane’s Fame: How Austen Conquered the World, discusses the Austen industry with novelist and screenwriter Deborah Moggach who won a BAFTA for her screenplay Pride and Prejudice.
What does our love affair with Austen’s characters and stories signify about us? And will her critical reputation outlive the cultural phenomenon she has become?
