The Pogues will be performing at the Echo Arena Liverpool on Wednesday 15th July 2009, as part of the Summer Pops Festival.
In the Eighties, The Pogues became one of Ireland’s biggest bands, as well as one of the world’s most radical, combining the instrumentation and tunes of traditional Irish music with the energy and attitude of punk rock spirit. Led by the charismatic singer, Shane Macgowen, who’s darkly romantic, wasted lifestyle, was so key to their spirit and success.
The Pogues classics include ‘Love You ‘Til The End, ‘Tuesday Morning,’ ‘The Old Main Drag’, ‘Sick Bed of Cuchallain’. The sad, beautiful, drunken ballads ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’ and ‘Fairytale of New York,’ the foot-stomping ‘Body Of An American,’ and the stirring, anthemic ‘Thousands Are Sailing’, ‘Dirty Old Town’, ‘The Irish Rover’ and Streams of Whiskey.’
Their best known hit, ‘Fairytale of New York’, recorded with late Kirsty MacColl, was voted favourite Christmas song in a poll by music TV channel VH1. The track, which went to number two in 1987, beat the original Band Aid single – recorded in 1984 – into second place.
