Windsor Festival 2009 @ Throughout Windsor - Description
Vladimir Ashkenazy, Michael Parkinson and Vera Lynn join the 2009 Festival to reflect upon past and present artistic achievement and encourage a new generation of talent…
In September 2009, the Windsor Festival will celebrate its Fortieth Anniversary as one of the countries’ leading arts, music and literary festivals. Running from 19th September – 4th October, this autumn’s Festival will play host to some of the world’s most gifted musicians and writers.
Sir Michael Parkinson is one of the nation’s most distinguished and well-loved broadcasters and journalists. The Windsor Festival, presents a unique opportunity for visitors to hear recollections of his favourite interviews and see long-lost footage of his encounter with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
This autumn’s Festival will also play host to national treasure Roy Hudd. Roy will look back at his 50 years in show business on the occasion of the publication of his memoir ‘A Fart in a Colander’ at The Theatre Royal on Saturday 3rd October. This promises to be an evening of anecdotes, fun, memories and life at its most entertaining.
Along with highlights such as these and following the successful launch of the inaugural International String Competition last year, Windsor Festival is delighted to announce the second competition at this year’s event taking place from the 21st September – 2nd October. The International String competition recognises the influence that Lord Menuhin had in the founding of the Festival forty years ago, and also builds on his desire to nurture musical talent and provide more opportunities for young musicians.
Eight performers have been selected to play from over 50 entries in the Semi finals, which will take place as a series of lunchtime concerts at Windsor Parish Church throughout the Festival, commencing daily at 1.10pm. Four performers will then be chosen to participate in the Final, an evening concert to be held at the Theatre Royal on Friday 2nd October at 7pm.
“Steeped in history, Windsor continues to provide the perfect backdrop for this cultural event, with top-quality concerts within Windsor Castle offering the rare opportunity to spend an evening in the stunning surrounds of the Waterloo Chamber and St George’s Chapel,†continues Denny. “Now in its fortieth year, there is just as much to celebrate as in previous years. It is our sincere desire that the local community and those from further afield will find pleasure in partaking in the Festival’s wide variety of events celebrating the arts.â€
